The Western Slope towns of Gunnison and Crested Butte are defined by their placement in the Colorado Rockies. Both are located in alpine valleys surrounded by 14,000-foot-high peaks with sparkling mountain-fed streams, and both dominate the Gunnison country, a unique wilderness covering over 4,000 square miles. Beginning over 400 years ago, Native Americans, fur traders, explorers, miners, railroaders, and cattlemen all made a place for themselves in the area. Today Gunnison, Crested Butte, and the Gunnison country remain isolated and tranquil. Recreation, tourism, and cattle ranching now reign supreme as Gunnison and Crested Butte attempt to preserve their distinctly Western heritage.

Pres. Theodore Roosevelt once referred to the Apache Trail as "one of the most spectacular best-worth-seeing sights of the world." The once narrow, ancient foot trail built as a supply road for the construction of Roosevelt Dam has now evolved into a state highway with majestic scenic vistas and historical grandeur. Even in the 1920s, the Southern Pacific Railroad touted this road as a "must-see side trip." Each year, thousands of people venture along the trail to take a step back in time and relish the breathtaking experience of this fabulous journey. The Fish Creek Hill section remains much as it was back in the early 1900s, a narrow one-vehicle passage on an extremely steep incline that drops 900 feet within a mile along the edge of a steep cliff. Although several miles of the road are now paved, dirt portions remain that allow tourists a sense of perilous adventure.

The contribution of slavery to the economic and social development of South Africa is an important part of our heritage, particularly in the Cape. In this informative and accessible account, Alan Mountain describes the history and experiences of slaves and slave owners. He recounts many and varied aspects of cultural, social and economic life at the time.

Part I covers the period from 1654 to emancipation in 1834, during which time many slaves were brought from Indonesia, India and parts of Africa. In the process Islam was introduced to our shores. With the demise of slavery, an epoch in South Africa?s past came to an end.

Part II tackles the legacy of slavery and the significant contribution it made to the development of the country.

The third part of the book is a user?friendly guide to the many sites that are linked to slavery in the Western Cape. Many of them have been declared heritage sites. Full?colour photographs, maps and location details are included, making An Unsung Heritage the ideal reference for locals and visitors alike.

Alan Mountain is the author of a number of books including First People of the Cape. He is also a skilled photographer.

Stone Mountain, an enormous granite dome and regional landmark, has compelled human interest since prehistory. The village that developed in its shadow is equally unique. Established as New Gibraltar, it was renamed and transplanted to the new railroad by early settlers and entrepreneurs. It prospered as a mecca for tourists and hosted the University School for Boys and the state's first agricultural fair. Anchored by the depot, Main Street's hotels, restaurants, and stores vied for the dollars of tourists and locals, and residential streets began to surround the thriving downtown. A flourishing granite industry attracted skilled, European laborers to the Southern village that was connected to the mountain's quarries by "the Dinky." Stone Mountain Village expanded after the Civil War to include Shermantown, an African American neighborhood. Granite became the village's architectural signature. Majestic views of the mountain in local backyards are reminders of the strong identity that has been forged between mountain and village, one that reflects both small-town life and a place on the world stage.

Beech Mountain was once a rugged wilderness known only to the Cherokee Indians. Eventually hunters, loggers, moonshiners, and settlers made their marks upon the mountain. In the 1960s, Tom Brigham, a Birmingham dentist, envisioned a ski resort in the South and chose Beech Mountain as the perfect site. Grover Robbins, a timber man and developer from Blowing Rock, turned Brighamas vision into the Carolina Caribbean Corporation, which developed a four-season resort with the Land of Oz at the top. Initially lots sold faster than roads could be built to reach them, and the overextended company went bankrupt. Property owners rallied to preserve what had been created, and in 1981, the mountain reinvented itself as a charming town and popular resort destination. In addition to a core of permanent residents, it draws thousands of visitors annually for skiing, hiking, spectacular scenery, cool summers, and excellent golf, tennis, and other recreational facilitiesaand for the special feeling that is Beech Mountain.

Big Timber, watched over by the Crazy Mountains of Southwest Montana, has always been named for its natural surroundings. Big Timber was originally founded in the late 1800s. An Irish immigrant named the settlement Dornix, from the Gaelic word adurnog, a which when translated means aa rock that fits in the hand and is handy for throwing, a and there are indeed many such rocks around the region. In 1883, however, when complications with the railroad forced the town to move to its present-day location, it was renamed Big Timber, for the grand and plentiful cottonwood trees along the banks of the nearby Boulder and Yellowstone Rivers. Pioneers began arriving in earnest around 1890, bringing with them sheep, and by 1892, Big Timber was among the worldas largest exporters of wool. Later, when a fire devastated the town, the community stood together to rebuild.

African Americans originally came to Tarpon Springs in the mid-1880s to work in the lumber mills. In the 1890s, a number of sponge divers arrived from the Bahamas and Key West to harvest and prepare the wealth of sponges found in the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Anclote River. Devoutly religious, these pioneers founded the African American Episcopal Church in 1887 and the Baptist Church in 1892. Union Academy School, the first African-American school in Tarpon Springs, was established in the early 1900s. The dedicated work ethic of early African-American settlers continues today. Many of their descendants serve as educators, politicians, and ministers.

This fascinating account of the Cape's indigenous people traces the origins and history of the San hunter-gatherers, whose ancestry in southern Africa dates back at least 120,000 years, and the Khoekhoe herders, who arrived in the south-western Cape about 2000 years ago. This is the first in a new series of full-color heritage books aimed at both local and overseas tourists. The author uncovers the rich history of the indigenous people of the Cape: Stone Age people, the San and the Khoikhoi, as well as the Griqua. This is the first time this history has been presented in a comprehensive, accessible way in a single book: The many specially-commissioned photos vividly bring to life the sites and events discussed; Maps and contact details are given for readers wishing to visit the heritage sites. The book has been produced in consultation with the South African Heritage Agency.

Crested Butte rises 8,885 feet above sea level on the edge of the beautiful Elk Mountains in the Gunnison Country of Colorado's Western Slope. Between Crested Butte and Aspen, 25 miles to the north, are six 14,000-foot-high peaks with 12,000-foot-high passes and scenery that takes the breath away. Crested Butte began as a silver camp but soon turned into one of the great coal towns of the West, with a rich ethnic heritage evolved from the mining camps. In the 21st century, Crested Butte is a tourist town of 1,500 residents highlighted by the Mount Crested Butte Ski Area, the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, and its wonderful wildflower and music festivals. The town today is what it always has been, "the queen jewel of the Elk Mountains."

One night, after an evening spent at an unsatisfying social gathering, Oriah Mountain Dreamer sat down and wrote her heartfelt poem 'The Invitation'. It begins, 'It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing…' Profound and passionate, the poem travelled by word-of-mouth and the Internet across the globe to be read at weddings, funerals and spiritual gatherings. Now, in this practical and inspiring book, the author expands on the ideas behind the poem to create a guidebook for living a life full of integrity, commitment and passion.

Remarkable…this book is at once a fierce and tender presence. Its wisdom could become a lifelong companion, engaging and awakening the original, unique rhythm of your mind and soul.'

International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA)
R1,369 Discovery Miles 13 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Complete Guide to Public Safety Cycling, Third Edition is the only publication devoted exclusively to public safety cycling. It represents decades of experience and the collective expertise of hundreds of police, EMS, and security personnel who operate bicycles in the line of duty. Although they serve in many capacities, they all agree that, in the hands of a trained public safety cyclist, the bicycle is not just a mode of transportation-it is a literally and figuratively a vehicle for delivering essential services to the community. Since the modern renaissance of police bicycle use in the late 1980s, the profession of public safety cycling has grown to encompass all branches of public safety. The International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) and the Complete Guide have evolved in tandem with it. Each edition of the Complete Guide reflects innovations in equipment and operations that impact the myriad ways in which public safety cyclists deploy their bicycles. Written by members and friends of IPMBA, the Third Edition features new and expanded material, including: * Bicycle Response Teams: A versatile, approachable crowd management team that responds quickly to crowd movements and changes in demeanor. * Community Engagement: An essential aspect of public safety that can be enhanced by the accessibility of personnel on bicycles and through bicycle-focused initiatives. * E-Bikes: A technology that has expanded patrol areas, enabled faster response times, and attracted additional public safety personnel to bicycle duty. * Specialized Security: A field with a focus on routine patrol, rather than call-driven response, for which bicycles are ideal. The Third Edition is well-researched and contains updated statistics, photos, figures, and examples of how public safety cyclists impact their communities as well as ways in which agencies can sustain and diversify their bicycle operations. This book is an essential resource for anyone who has a passion for public safety cycling.

When our lives fall apart, we often feel broken, ashamed and deeply alone. What if you knew that, despite the uniqueness of your own experiences, each stage of the process was universal, that it was mapped out in a myth thousands of years old?

"The heroine is one who has remembered, reclaimed and reconnected with her unfettered red thread. She has been initiated into the spirit of the depths by her dark sister, and walks with newfound, embodied authority into the upperworld."

What if, despite the uniqueness of your own life and experiences, each stage of the process of descent was universal? The journey of Descent & Rising is the core initiation of the feminine – the heroine's journey – one travelled by billions of women before you.

Descent & Rising explores real stories of women's descents into the underworld of the psyche – journeys of dissolution, grief and breakdown precipitated by trauma, fertility issues, loss of loved ones, mental health struggles, FGM, sexual abuse, birthing experiences, illness, war, burnout...

This is territory that Carly Mountain, psychotherapist and women's initiatory guide, knows intimately, and guides us through with exquisite care and insight, using the ancient Sumerian myth of the goddess Inanna as a blueprint. She maps not only the descent but the rising and familiarises us with a process of female psycho-spiritual growth overlooked in patriarchal culture.

"The heroine's journey is an erotic, mystical initiation that revivifies our place in the shape of things...The fodder of our descents provides the compost from which the richest fruits of our lives can grow. If only we can turn towards our pain and let it work in us."
